EV_Largo Espaço Vazio | Art Residency Program | Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | Artist Residency

EV_LARGO Art Residency combines EV Espaço Vazio art residency, housing and Largo das Artes cultural center. In the past 10 years both have hosted and presented national and international established and young multi-disciplinary contemporary artists, curators, researchers, projects, group and solo exhibitions and festivals.

Espaço Vazio EV, created and directed by Miguel Sayad from an operative and methodological concept that combines art and psychoanalysis, is not only a place of dwelling for reflection, experimentation, but a constitutive experience of living the artistic residence. EV was founded in the year 2000 with the collaboration of Brazilian artists.

The residency program (summer 2020) on 'Transitional Spaces' focuses on exploring relationships between body, nature and the urban landscape of Rio de Janeiro through multi-disciplinary experimental artistic research and projects. This program is curated by Daniela Labra, Independent curator, writer and critique on contemporary visual arts who lives and works in Berlin and by Gabriela Maciel, artistic director and permanent curator of EV_Largo. During one month of this program we will have the participation of the visiting artist Gabi Schillig.

Critical Costume 2020: Costume Agency | Oslo National Academy of the Arts | KHIO Norway | Conference & Exhibition

"Critical Costume 2020 will focus on the agency of costume in performance, costume as the main performer and the costume designer as the initiator of performance. Following Costume Agency, a three-year artistic research project by Christina Lindgren (KHIO, Oslo) and Sodja Lotker (DAMU, Prague), Critical Costume 2020 will explore different ways in which costume performs, different genres and formats it initiates, but also specific dramaturgical strategies that are ingrained in costume, and are probably yet to be used to their full potential. Critical Costume 2020 (CC 2020) at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHIO) consists of workshops, a conference, and an art exhibition." Handshake Project HS6 | Auckland, New Zealand | Mentoring Program 2020 - 2021

'HANDSHAKE is a space where established artists hand-over some of their quality knowledge to those asking for a ‘hand’; it is a two-way project that encourages symbiosis and give & take. HANDSHAKE has two stages: the first is more like a traditional mentor/mentee relationship and the second is where the mentor becomes their colleague and in some cases their collaborator. This buildup allows the Handshaker to develop their work and ideas as an independent practicing artist. The project was created by Wellington-based jewellery sparkplug, artist, curator, writer and tutor Peter Deckers. The idea was born out of recognition of the need for ongoing support for talented New Zealand graduates after completing their jewellery art study. (...) HS6 is a 2-year programme that encourages experimentation, coaching and exhibiting. For HS6 twelve mentees have been selected by Iris Eichenberg (Michigan, US), with their mentors. The artists´ explorations will be through research and experimentation, as well as through design processes and materials.' (source: Handshake Project)

Gabi was nominated as the mentor of Simon Swale, who in his work "utilises industrial materials and processes to make objects that are increasingly concerned with relationships between audience and urban space". At each end of the year an exhibition is planned: in 2020 at Te Auaha, Wellington and in 2021 at Pah Homestead, Auckland in New Zealand.

I looked over my shoulder and… made a space | BDA Galerie Berlin | Artist´s Talk with Kay Fingerle and Astrid Bornheim

Nida Art Colony | Lithuania | Returning Artist-in-Residence 2019

Gabi will return as an artist-in-residence to Nida Art Colony, Lithuania for the month of September 2019 and continue her research and artistic work in the landscape of the Curonian Spit. Since its opening in 2011 the Colony has been hosting invited artists, designers, architects, curators and art researchers.

She will continue her project she started during the residency in Nida in August 2018 investigating the relation of body and landscape. She will create relational objects or communication devices, capes or spatial displays that are carried on the body to open up a dialogue between the human body and the landscape through type and materiality.

'Nida Art Colony is an art and meeting space, surrounded by sand dunes and seas. As a resourceful platform, it runs an Artist-in-Residence Programme, Nida Doctoral School, and initiates art, education and research projects. NAC is a subdivision of Vilnius Academy of Arts and provides space for workshops, intensive courses, exhibitions, seminars, rehearsals, artists’ talks and screenings. NAC is located on the Curonian Spit, a peninsula dividing the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. The spit is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the most beautiful and unique cultural landscapes of Europe.' (Text by Nida Art Colony)

Bucerius Summer School | ZEIT-Stiftung | ANCB The Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory | Talk & Workshop

The Bucerius Summer School on Global Governance 2019 will take place from 18 to 30 August 2019. It is an annual intensive two-week summer seminar and today one of the most longstanding and successful programs of the ZEIT-Stiftung.

The ANCB will host a one-day programme within the frame of the Bucerius Summer School 2019. It will examine questions regarding “TransitSpaces” on spatial, social, artistic and political levels through input presentations and participatory workshops by Barbara Holzer, Gabi Schillig, Benjamin Tallis, Dunya Bouchi and Miriam Mlecek.

The workshop on 'Transitional Spaces' will be a collaboration of Gabi Schillig and Yuka Oyama. The 'transitional object' (D.W. Winnicott) creates an intermediate space that connects the internal and external worlds of the person. Our workshop will invite the participants to experiment with corporeality, multi-sensoriality and materiality through creating 'Transitional (sculptural) Spaces'.

The ensemble of Masters’ Houses in Dessau became the epitome of the artists’ colony in the 1920s: this was where the Bauhaus Masters lived next door to one another. With the Bauhaus Residency Programme, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation has made it possible for young, international artists to once again live and work in the Masters’ Houses since 2016. Their works created during the Bauhaus Residencies are shown in the exhibition Gropius House || Contemporary in the new Gropius House. In March 2019, the eponymous publication, edited for the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation by Claudia Perren and Alexia Pooth, generously funded by the Stiftung Meisterhäuser Dessau, was published by Kerber Verlag.

On June 10, 2019, the publication will be presented to the public and the first three years of the Bauhaus Residence Programme will be reviewed: from 3 to 6 pm, some of the former residents will be available for guided tours of the exhibition Gropius House || Contemporary and the Masters’ Houses Muche | Schlemmer. At 6 pm, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and the designshop bauhaus dessau invite you to a book presentation and reception in the garden of Gropius House.
